Keep it Dry: Never submerge the cast in water. While bathing, cover the cast with plastic wrap or a waterproof cast cover to keep it absolutely dry.
Do Not Scratch: Never insert objects, such as coat hangers or knitting needles, inside the cast to scratch itchy skin, as this can break the skin and cause infection.
Elevation: Elevate the foot above heart level as much as possible for the first 48 to 72 hours to reduce swelling.
Avoid Weight-Bearing: Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding weight-bearing. Do not put weight on the cast until it has fully hardened (usually 24 hours) and only if cleared to do so.
Monitor for Complications: Seek medical attention if you experience increased pain, numbness, tingling, or if your toes turn blue or purple.
